Mount Semeru Erupts Five Separate Times in East Java

(MENAFN) Indonesia’s Mount Semeru, located in East Java province, erupted five separate times on Wednesday, propelling volcanic ash up to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above its summit, according to reports from state media.

The initial eruption was recorded at 12:28 a.m. local time (1728 GMT Tuesday). During this event, an ash column climbed approximately 600 meters above the peak. Reports indicated that the white-to-gray plume was of moderate density and drifted toward the north.

The most intense activity occurred at 5:36 a.m. local time, when ash reached a height of 1,000 meters above the summit and spread in a northeasterly direction, Liswanto, an officer at the Mount Semeru Observation Post, said.

A final eruption was documented at 8:06 a.m., as reported by Antara. Monitoring equipment captured the event on a seismograph, showing a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 125 seconds.

Local authorities have urged residents to refrain from conducting activities within 500 meters of the Besuk Kobokan riverbank. Officials warned that pyroclastic flows and lava streams could potentially extend up to 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) from the volcano’s summit.

Indonesia is situated along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area characterized by high seismic and volcanic activity, and is home to more than 120 active volcanoes.
