Indonesia Threatens Ban on X

(MENAFN) Mounting pressure surrounds the US-based social media platform X after Indonesia on Wednesday cautioned that the company could face prohibition in the Southeast Asian nation due to obscene material involving minors.

Jakarta’s insistence that X adhere to national legislation follows similar objections raised by the United Kingdom and the European Commission against the platform.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications stated that preliminary inquiries suggest Grok artificial intelligence lacks clear and sufficient safeguards to prevent the creation and circulation of pornographic material derived from authentic photographs of citizens.

“This situation has the potential to violate the right to privacy and the right to one’s image, particularly when a person’s photo is manipulated or disseminated without their consent,” explained Alexander Sabar, director general of Indonesia’s Digital Space Supervision.

The ministry emphasized that all digital services functioning within the country must comply with Indonesian laws and regulations. It warned that if breaches or non-cooperation are detected, administrative penalties could be enforced, including suspension of access to Grok AI services and the X platform.

Under Indonesian legislation, producing or distributing pornographic material is strictly forbidden, with violators facing imprisonment ranging from six months to ten years or monetary fines.

Indonesia’s stance came shortly after reports from France revealed that the Paris prosecutor’s office had initiated a preliminary probe into Grok over claims it generated sexually explicit deepfake imagery of minors.
